About Reibun
Reibun is a searchable, filterable database of Japanese sentences built for English-speaking learners. Every sentence is annotated with furigana, romaji, a natural and literal translation, free-form grammar commentary, and clickable tags. Every word has a dictionary breakdown a tap away.
Data sources
- Tatoeba
- A community-maintained collection of sentences and translations. The source of every sentence in the current corpus.
- Tanaka Corpus
- A collection of ~150,000 Japanese-English sentence pairs compiled by Professor Yasuhito Tanaka at Hyogo University and expanded by volunteers. Released to the public domain and absorbed into Tatoeba, it forms the core of the current sentence database.
- JMDict
- A Japanese-English dictionary database maintained by the Electronic Dictionary Research and Development Group (EDRDG). Used for word breakdowns, readings, and meanings.
- KANJIDIC2
- A kanji dictionary database maintained by the EDRDG. Used for kanji readings, meanings, stroke counts, and grade metadata.
Licenses
Sentences are from the Tanaka Corpus (public domain). Dictionary data from JMDict and KANJIDIC2 is licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0 by the EDRDG.
