~てもらう ('have someone do X for me, receive the favor of someone doing X') is a giving-and-receiving auxiliary central to Japanese politeness. The structure positions the speaker (or in this third-person case, the topic) as the beneficiary, with the unstated agent doing the carrying. に would mark the agent if specified ('have X carry it'), but here the agent is omitted.
