半ば~半ば~ ('half X, half Y') splits a single action into two simultaneous, partial modes — the vivid picture is of a log being neither cleanly carried nor cleanly dragged but somewhere awkwardly in between. ~ようにして frames each mode as a manner: 引きずるようにして ('in such a way as to drag'), 抱えるようにして ('in such a way as to carry in one's arms'). Stringing the two ように clauses with て before the final 運んだ packages everything as a single complex carrying action. The ようにして construction is excellent for describing improvised or makeshift movements that don't fit any single verb cleanly.
