~足 (counter for footwear)

The classifier counter ~足 (read そく) for pairs of footwear — shoes, boots, sandals, socks. Numbered as いっそく (一足), にそく (二足), さんぞく (三足); the counter triggers minor sound changes typical of Japanese classifier morphology. The same kanji is read あし as the body part 'foot/leg.' 一足 ('one pair'), 二足 ('two pairs'), 何足 ('how many pairs').
