counter 番 (numbered position)

The counter/ordinal-suffix 番 attaches to numbers to form ordinals or sequence identifiers: 一番 ('number one, first'), 10番ホーム ('platform 10'), 三番目 ('the third'), 5番ピッチ ('pitch 5'). Different contexts select different readings; the suffix marks position-in-sequence rather than counting discrete items.
