で (manner)

The particle で marking the manner, role, condition, or capacity in which an action takes place — '[do] in X manner / by way of X / in X capacity.' 早口で話す ('speak fast / in fast-mouth manner'), 大声で叫ぶ ('yell loudly'), 笑顔で答える ('answer with a smile'), 一人で ('by oneself'), トップで合格する ('pass at the top'), 現金で払う ('pay in cash'). Specifies the mode or condition under which the action takes place. Overlaps with instrumental で in some usages.
