~であること (nominalized copular clause)

The nominalizer ~であること attaches to a copular predicate to form a noun phrase: 'the fact that X is Y.' である is the formal copula, こと the nominalizer. Common when the nominalized clause has a noun or な-adjective predicate. 学生であることを忘れる ('forget that one is a student'), 無罪であることを主張する ('claim that one is innocent').
