Dejima and Dutch loanwords

From 1641 to 1853, Dutch traders at Dejima (出島), an artificial island in Nagasaki harbor, were Japan's primary window onto the West. The handful of Dutch loanwords still in everyday Japanese — コーヒー, ガラス, ピント, レンズ, ランプ — date from this period.
