telegrams (電報)

電報 — telegrams — were once the standard way to send urgent personal news, wedding congratulations (祝電), or condolence messages (弔電) in Japan. While digital communication has displaced everyday telegrams, ceremonial telegrams (祝電/弔電) are still sent for weddings and funerals where physical attendance is impossible.
