がりがり (crunchy/grinding/intense)

A mimetic for hard, crunchy, grinding texture or sound — the crunch of biting something hard, the scratch of rough surfaces. Also used for intense, grinding effort (the root of がり勉 'study grind'), physical scraping, or emaciated thinness.
