interior emotion convention (~がる)

Japanese grammar reflects a cultural convention that you cannot directly assert another person's interior feelings — only their outward signs. The suffix ~がる ('to show signs of') is the structural device for talking about what someone else seems to feel. 食べたがる, 寒がる, 嫌がる — all describe visible behavior, not interior state.
