反省 (self-reflection / self-criticism)

A foundational concept in Japanese education and social life: examining one's own behavior critically and committing to improve. From childhood, Japanese students participate in 反省会 (reflection meetings) and write 反省文 (self-criticism essays) after misbehavior. Carries far more moral weight than English 'reflect on.'
