引きこもり (hikikomori)

A modern Japanese social phenomenon: people who withdraw from society for months or years, rarely leaving their homes. The verb root こもる ('to be shut up inside') is shared with everyday verbs like 閉じこもる ('shut oneself in'), which carry a faint echo of the more serious withdrawal.
