本音と建前 (true feelings vs public front)

A central Japanese cultural concept: the distinction between 本音 ('one's true feelings') and 建前 ('the public face / socially appropriate front one presents'). Hiding one's emotions to maintain harmony or social grace is generally accepted, even expected, in many situations; reading the gap between 本音 and 建前 is part of conversational competence.
