ironic quotation marks (scare quotes)

The use of 「...」 around a word or phrase to signal distanced or ironic quotation — the speaker does not fully endorse the enclosed label. Equivalent to English scare quotes. Distinct from `direct quotation` (verbatim speech) and `metalinguistic reference` (citing a word as a word).
