糸口 (thread-end, starting clue)

Literally 'the end of a thread' — the place where you grab hold and start unraveling. Metaphorically, a clue, a lead, or a starting point for solving a problem. 糸口を見つける ('find a lead'), 糸口にする ('use as a starting point').
