Japanese funeral etiquette

Japanese funerals (葬式) follow detailed and strict etiquette — black formal attire (喪服), specific monetary gifts (香典) presented in special envelopes, prescribed greetings, restrained demeanor. Most funerals are Buddhist with incense-offering (焼香) at the altar. Failure to follow proper etiquette is considered seriously inappropriate.
