Japanese nickname formation

The conventional way Japanese nicknames are built: shortening a given name and adding affectionate ~ちゃん, often with a small ッ producing an emphatic geminate (Yocchan from Yoshiko, Macchan from Masahiro). Common in family, friend, and youth-culture contexts.
