買いかぶる (to overestimate)

A native compound verb 買いかぶる, literally 'to buy and overdo,' meaning 'to overestimate, overrate, give too much credit to (someone's ability).' The metaphor is paying more than something is worth. Often used with a person's abilities, character, or potential.
