雷が落ちる (lightning strikes)

The fixed expression 雷が落ちる ('thunder falls' = 'lightning strikes'). The verb 落ちる is used because lightning is conceived as descending from the sky to a target, not as a horizontal flash. Also used metaphorically for a sudden angry outburst.
