The verb 気付く ('to notice, to become aware of, to realize') takes its object with に — the noticed thing is the target of the sudden awareness, not a direct object. 間違いに気付く ('notice a mistake'), 彼の変化に気付いた ('noticed his change'), 危険に気付く ('become aware of the danger').
