戸籍 (koseki, family register)

The Japanese koseki (戸籍) — a centralized family register tracking households (not individuals) through births, marriages, divorces, and deaths. When two people marry, one spouse legally leaves their parents' register and joins the other's, creating a new household entry. Unique to Japan in this form.
