metalinguistic reference

A sentence whose topic is another word or linguistic form, typically set off in 「」 — 'the word X,' 'the antonym of Y,' 'how to read Z.' Common in grammar explanations, dictionary entries, and language-study material. The mention-vs-use distinction: the cited word is being mentioned (talked about), not used to denote its normal referent.
