A set idiom literally 'the body shrinks/cringes/cowers,' meaning 'to freeze with fear, to be paralyzed by terror or shock.' The body part 身 ('body, oneself') is grammatically the subject of the involuntary reaction. Often paired with sights or events that trigger sudden fear.
