The productive suffix ~み attached to certain i-adjective stems and verb forms to create nouns expressing the abstract quality or experience: 痛い → 痛み ('pain'), 苦しむ → 苦しみ ('suffering'), 楽しむ → 楽しみ ('enjoyment'), 悲しい → 悲しみ ('sadness').
