見ず知らず (total stranger)

A fixed compound built from the classical negative ず on both 見る ('see') and 知る ('know') — 'without seeing, without knowing,' i.e. 'a total stranger.' Used attributively as 見ず知らずの人 / 見ず知らずの間柄. More emphatic than 見知らぬ人.
