亡くなる (to pass away)

The standard polite/respectful verb for someone's death — used in news reports, obituaries, and conversations about anyone the speaker knows or respects. Formed from 亡い ('lost, no more') + なる ('become'). The blunt 死ぬ ('to die') sounds harsh applied to real people; 亡くなる is the default.
