奈良 (Nara)

Japan's first stable capital (710–794, the Nara Period), located south of Kyoto. Home to Tōdai-ji and its Great Buddha, Kasuga Shrine, and a population of free-roaming sika deer that have become iconic. Together with Kyoto, the cradle of classical Japanese culture.
