The particle に attached to a mimetic word, marking it adverbially before a verb of state or change. Parallels the mimetic-adverbial と but with a stative-descriptor flavor — かんかんに怒る ('blaze with anger'), がりがりに痩せる ('be skinny to the bone'), ぺこぺこになる ('get really hungry').
