JLPT (日本語能力試験)

The Japanese Language Proficiency Test (日本語能力試験, JLPT) — the standard test of Japanese ability for non-native speakers. Levels range from N5 (easiest) to N1 (hardest). The pre-2010 system used 一級 through 四級, where 二級 (level 2) corresponds to the older grading. The colloquial 日本語検定 is sometimes used loosely for the same test.
