~の方 (direction/side)

The pattern [noun]+の方 (ほう), where 方 ('direction, side, way') softens a relative-position noun into a general 'direction / side / area.' 前の方 ('the front area'), 上の方 ('the upper area'), 右の方 ('the right side'), 駅の方 ('toward the station'), 自分のほう ('toward me'). Often combined with に or へ for motion. Vaguer and softer than a direct destination marker. Distinct from ~の方 (preference) and ~のほうが (comparative).
