~らしい (seems, apparently)

The auxiliary ~らしい marking hearsay or inference — 'seems, apparently, I hear, I gather.' Slightly more reliable-sounding than そうだ (pure hearsay), based on accumulated information rather than direct observation. Distinct from the suffix ~らしい meaning 'has the quality of X.'
