連用形 connective (stem-form 'and')

Linking two verbs by putting the first in 連用形 (i-stem) — e.g. 痛み悲しむ ('grieve and ache'). More literary/written than the te-form equivalent (痛んで悲しむ). Common in formal prose, news, and elevated style.
