rhetorical paradox

A rhetorical figure built on an apparent contradiction — pairing a term with its opposite or near-opposite to make a pointed claim ('collective responsibility = no responsibility,' 'losing is winning'). Common in Japanese aphorisms, ことわざ, and 四字熟語.
