先立たれる (be predeceased by)

The passive of 先立つ ('to predecease, go ahead in death'). ~に先立たれる means 'be predeceased by X / outlive X.' One of Japanese's classic adversity-passive constructions — the surviving family member is the topic, and the deceased is marked with に. A polite, weight-bearing way to refer to outliving a child or spouse.
