シーン (dead silence)

A state mimetic (擬態語) for complete, profound silence — the kind of stillness where nothing stirs. Written variably as シーン, シン, しーん, or the hiragana adverbial form しんと, typically followed by と or としている (しんとする = 'to fall silent,' シーンとしている = 'to be dead quiet'). Paradoxically, it is the 'sound' of no sound at all — iconic in manga and narrative prose for hushed scenes.
