私立探偵 (private detective)

The figure of the 私立探偵 ('private detective') in Japanese popular culture, drawn from Western detective fiction (Sherlock Holmes, hard-boiled American novels) and naturalized into manga, novels, and television. Real-world Japanese private investigators handle infidelity, missing persons, and corporate matters; the detective-fiction archetype, however, draws on imported genre conventions.
