知る vs 知っている (state of knowing)

The verb 知る ('come to know') and its resulting-state ~ている form 知っている ('know, be in the state of knowing'). Plain 知る denotes the moment of learning; 知っている describes the ongoing state of possessing the knowledge. A canonical pair for teaching the stative use of ~ている.
