太刀打ちする (rival)

A set phrase from samurai combat imagery, literally 'to engage in sword fight,' meaning 'to rival, compete, stand up to (on equal terms).' Takes に on the rival. Most often appears negated as 太刀打ちできない ('can't stand a chance, can't hold a candle to, is no match'), used for opponents, challenges, or tasks beyond one's ability.
