担任 (homeroom teacher)

In Japanese schools, the 担任 ('person in charge') is a teacher assigned to a single class for the academic year. They handle roll call, life guidance, parent contact, and (in elementary school) most subjects. The 担任 relationship is closer and more responsibility-bearing than any equivalent in many Western school systems.
