tempura (Portuguese loanword)

Tempura — the Japanese cuisine of battered and deep-fried food — is traditionally believed to derive its name from Portuguese 'têmpora' (Ember days, a period of fasting when Portuguese missionaries ate fried fish). Introduced via trade in the 16th–17th centuries.
