~と思いきや (contrary to expectations)

The set conjunction ~と思いきや, '(I) thought X but (actually) Y' — used to flag a surprising or counterintuitive turn. 簡単と思いきや、難しかった ('I thought it'd be easy, but it was hard'). Slightly literary/written register.
