つかまる + に

The verb つかまる ('to grab onto, to cling to, to be caught') takes its target with に, not を — 手すりにつかまる ('grab onto the handrail'), 警察につかまる ('get caught by the police'). Contact/attachment verbs in Japanese commonly take に where English would use 'onto' or 'by.'
