月見 (moon viewing)

A traditional Japanese autumn custom of viewing the full moon — typically the harvest moon in mid-September (中秋の名月). Accompanied by offerings of 月見団子 (dumplings) and 薄 (pampas grass), and sometimes a gathering (月見の会). The classical/literary term for the same custom is 観月 (かんげつ), preserved in Heian-era court poetry and formal references to moon-viewing parties (観月の宴).
