渡る (cross over / travel to abroad)

The verb 渡る ('cross over, traverse') used for crossing seas/borders to a foreign country: アメリカに渡る ('go over to America'), 海を渡る ('cross the sea'). More deliberate and narratively weighty than 行く. Sino-Japanese compounds: 渡米, 渡欧, 渡仏.
