~屋 (shop / shopkeeper suffix)

The productive suffix ~屋 (や) attached to a product or trade noun to form 'shop selling X' or 'X-seller / X-er': 本屋 ('bookstore / bookseller'), パン屋 ('bakery / baker'), 八百屋 ('greengrocer'), 魚屋 ('fish shop / fishmonger'), 靴屋 ('shoe store / cobbler'). The same form denotes both the establishment and the proprietor; with さん it leans toward the person (パン屋さん 'the baker').
