役に立たない (useless)

A stock phrase meaning 'is not useful, is useless' — literally 'does not stand to a role'. Its positive counterpart 役に立つ ('is useful, comes in handy') is equally common. Emphatic 何の役にも立たない means 'is of no use at all'.
