The fixed expression 役に立つ ('to be useful, be helpful'), literally 'stand in a role.' Works both predicatively (この本は役に立つ 'this book is useful') and attributively (役に立つ情報 'useful information'). Negation 役に立たない is common, meaning 'useless.'
