Sino-Japanese compounds where two opposite-meaning kanji are paired to form a noun representing the whole question or range — 安否 (safety-or-not), 是非 (right-or-wrong), 出欠 (attendance-or-absence), 賛否 (support-or-opposition). A productive nominalization pattern in formal Japanese.
