'have' as existence (がある)

grammar

11 sentences

Japanese expresses possession with an existence predicate rather than a dedicated 'have' verb: [possessor]は/には [thing]がある/いる. The possessed thing is the grammatical subject; the possessor is the topic (は marks neutral topic, には adds delimiting or contrastive nuance). Inanimate possessions take ある; animate ones take いる. Used both for literal existence and for attributing a feature: 能力がある ('has ability'), 食欲がある ('has an appetite').
